How To Become A CSM, Certified Scrum Master?

There are different certifications on Agile – Scrum available from various organizations. We can evaluate each one of them and select the best as per our career aspirations. Below, you will find some important information on CSM (Certified Scrum Master) training and certification through Scrum Alliance.


Perhaps, the most popular and well known organization is Scrum Alliance. It issues Scrum Master Certification known as CSM (Certified Scrum Master).


1. Attend an in-person two-day CSM course by selecting a popular Certified Scrum Trainer in your area. You can search courses provided in your area and enroll as per your convenience.
2. After the completion of the course, you will receive welcome email that makes you eligible to take the CSM online exam.
3. Take the CSM online exam within 90 days after you received the email. You will get two attempts within this period to pass the exam. You should correctly answer 24 out of 35 questions to pass. If you don’t pass within 90 days then you can retake the exam with the fee of $25.
4. Accept the License Agreement, after you pass the exam.


Typically the in-person two day course price ranges between $1,000 and $1,500. This depends upon which Certified Scrum Trainer you select. And, usually most of these course price include the first time exam fee.


The CSM certification through Scrum Alliance is valid for two years. You need to renew it with the renewal cost of $100. You don’t have to go through the education process or retake exams to renew the certification.

There are other organizations like Scrum.Org, Professional Management Institute (PMI), and many others. These also provide scrum related certifications. They have their own certification requirements, processes, and costs associated. Overall, you can compare all these options and select the best to meet your career goals.
